Daughter of the Sun

Journal

Monday, January 23, 2006

I’m happy to report that I’m 99 percent recovered from the whole flu episode. This is the first time in over four years that I've had any kind of ailment and this flu more than made up for all of that time. Now I have to go on a major gain weight campaign because I lost so much weight from not being able to eat anything solid for several days. To that end, I baked an apple pie last night. Between the stick of butter that went into the crust and the 1/2 stick that went into the filling, I think I'm well on my way to gaining a few pounds.

Saturday night I had dinner in Chinatown with my new friend, WCC. Then we went to Little Italy and had dessert. It was my first night out since being stricken with the bug. It was nice hanging out with someone who also doesn’t drink alcohol. Not that I mind that other people drink, it’s just that when I go out with people who drink, they usually try to pressure me into having a drink as well, or feel self-conscious about drinking in front of me or think I’m being judgmental, which I’m totally not.

When I got home, I wound up watching several episodes of Smallville that I’d previously recorded. ECB got me hooked on that show. The next thing I knew, the sun was coming up. I slept for about four hours and then got out of bed because I had a lot to do Sunday, like grocery shopping and cooking for the early part of the week.

I got a call from a woman today who books acts at a café in Montclair, New Jersey. She wanted to know if I was interested in performing a short set of about 3 or 4 songs at her café on Tuesday. Not only was she not offering to pay me but she wanted me to buy an entrée while I was there. I was highly insulted. I said that I felt it was bad enough I was being asked to perform for free but to then be obligated to buy an entrée was adding insult to injury. She said she thought it was not too much to ask, considering that she was offering me exposure at her café. I said I felt that I was offering free entertainment for her customers and that, since she didn’t have to take any money out of her pocket to pay me to do that, I felt I shouldn’t have to take any money out of my pocket to pay her for the privilege. We didn’t reach a happy medium and I declined her generous offer as graciously as I could. This is why people have agents, so that they can be the bad guys and be rude and tell these folks who are out there taking advantage of artists to shove off without it adversely affecting the artist. Maybe I’m naïve but I feel that artists shouldn’t have to pay to perform.
