Daughter of the Sun

Journal

Sunday, November 6, 2005

I must be the densest person on the planet. I responded to a posting on Craig’s List for entertainers for Splash on West 17th Street. You’d think the host’s name would have given me an inkling of what to expect (Cherries Jubilee) but no, silly me, I thought it was a regular type of performance venue.

When I pulled up in front of the place, I thought, “this doesn’t look like a performance space.” I could hear the house dance music before I even fully opened the door. Once inside, the first thing I noticed was the disco ball suspended from the ceiling. Then I realized I was the only female on the premises.

Cherries Jubilee greeted me as I walked in. She led me to a dressing room and explained the setup to me. There were to be five performers including myself. Three of the performers were in drag. They had names like Syphillus Diller, Chelsea Grammer, and Visa Declined, who was fabulous. She performed a dance routine, which included grinding and pumping an imaginery man, to a song by Peaches that I’d not heard before. Not that I’d ever heard of Peaches before, although I thought the song was fabulous.

Chelsea lip-synched Rolling on the River and did a perfect Tina Turner. She also gave me some great make-up tips and showed me how to get more cleavage.

The emcee kept saying that it was a drag competition and at first I wondered if they thought I was a man in drag. I actually wondered if I could pull off that deception and how low an octave could I possibly sing in.

Finally it was my turn to go onstage. The emcee said, “Occasionally we allow people onstage who have vaginas. We have such a person in our midst tonight. Please welcome Setra.” That was my introduction. When I got onto the stage, I said, “Yes, I do have a vagine. However, I use it with discretion.” That got a big applause from the audience. I sang Falling In Love Again because Cherries Jubilee said, “the more dramatic, the better” and that’s the most dramatic song I have. I was surprised when I got applause twice during the song and lots of applause when I was done.

Some of the men in the audience looked uncomfortable about my being there. Maybe they thought I was judging them or something. I really don’t care who’s doing who. It’s got nothing to do with me. Besides, I think that love, wherever one finds it, is a wonderful thing.

All in all, a good time was had by all, myself including. And I got paid a hundred bucks to boot! What could be bad about that?!

More soon...
