SETRA BIO

Upon first listen, one might be tempted to cocmpare Setra to Sade or India Arie because of her sultry vocals and folksy guitar strums or to Carole King for her catchy melodies and clever, magical story telling skills. But then, as one continues to listen, it becomes crystal clear why Girlistic Magazine called Setra's first CD "must have music." Now, on the brink of the independent release of her follow-up CD, it becomes even more evident that, like a delightful fruit that ripes with time, this "daughter of the sun" has proven that her music has universal appeal that can stand the test of time. Debbie Micell put it best when she said, in her article in Reversed Ink Magazine, "I guarantee you'll be singing along and wondering why you don't hear [more of] Setra's music on the radio."

Before putting together her first collection of songs, Setra worked with Tony Wilson (tech for The Rolling Stones on their Bigger Bang world tour) to build her own home recording facility. She then wrote and produced a collection of songs about life, aptly entitled "Songs About It."

In addition to writing these catchy, quirky songs, Setra also performed the music and produced and mixed the album herself, along with a little help from some great musicians. Pianist, Joe Scott, who graced the albums of and/or toured with Lou Rawls, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson, added his magic fingers to "Hearts & Flowers" and Kamu, whose skills have graced the albums of stars like Chaka Khan and Luther Vandross, played guitar on "This Time," as well as produced the track. "In My Room" is one of several songs Setra co-produced with Justin Strauss (Tina Turner, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Depeche Mode) and recorded for Columbia Records, before their mutual parting of ways.

"They just didn't get me as an artist," Setra says. "They were trying to turn me into another Lil' Kim. Don't get me wrong, I think Lil' Kim is an amazing performer. That's just not who I am. That's like trying to turn Lenny Kravitz into another Snoop Dog."

In addition to her numerous musical compositions for the independent film genre, Setra also arranged and performed vocals for Hoppy Komiyama on his Toshiba-EMI album and on the Refugee Camp's production for Sony/Japan artist, Pushim's, hit single, It's Too Late.

You may have been fortunate enough to catch Setra in "Love Letter to New York" which aired on the PBS broadcasting stations, as she, music mogul, Clive Davis, Chocolate Genius, and a host of other music notables talked about their love of and passion for music.

Setra can also be seen on episode 7 of the hit television show, LA Ink, getting her sun tattoo while discussing her commitment to music and what inspires her, sharing her music with her television audience. Check out the video on her Videos page here.

Award winning producer, Michael King, utilized Setra's writing and production talents for the groundbreaking documentary Rapping With Shakespeare which follows the lives of five high school students in Los Angeles, California's turbulent Crenshaw district.

One listen to Setra's moving lyrical style and sultry vocals and it's clear why she's been sought after by Sony for both her songwriting skills as well as her artistry.

"Getting a deal is not important to me," she says. "Being free creatively and staying true to the song is what it's all about."
